Desiree Braziel.
Spatial Data Scientist / Cartographer / Librarian / Sailor

About Me
With a diverse background encompassing Spatial Data Analysis, Cartography, a bit of Library Science, and Sailing, I am a dedicated professional poised to contribute to the dynamic field of mapmaking. My journey began with a cross-country biking expedition and a challenging 500-mile hike along the Pacific Crest Trail, sparking my passion for maps and navigation.

During my academic tenure at the University of Oregon, I honed my skills in spatial data science and cartography. As a Research Assistant in the Geography Department, where I classified afforested areas in the Aral Sea using PlantLab data and CollectEarth Launcher, under the guidance of Dr. Kate Shields. Additionally, as a GIS Analyst for the Oregon State University Department of Horticulture, I conducted suitability analysis for The Dry Farming Institute, a drought-resilient food systems initiative, supervised by Dr. Lucas Nebert.

Building on these experiences, I now serve as a Geospatial Technician at NV5 Global Inc. In this role, I analyze, edit, and conduct quality control of NIR and bathymetric lidar data and create in-depth NIR, bathymetric, and elevation-derived hydrography reports for private, state, and federal agencies. These roles have refined my technical expertise, strengthened my project management skills, and solidified my passion for geospatial analysis.

In addition to my academic and professional achievements, I have served as a Librarian for the Whiteaker Street Library, a mobile bike library catering to the Eugene region. From 2019-2024, I have volunteered and assumed the role of management director, refining my organizational and operational prowess while positively impacting the community.
Furthermore, my sailing expertise in the Thistle fleet has flourished under the guidance of the skippers at the Eugene Yacht Club. This experience has honed not only my sailing proficiency but also invaluable qualities such as discipline, teamwork, and adaptability.

Looking ahead, I am eager to leverage my effective communication and attentive listening skills to foster cohesive teams in the realms of data analysis and cartography. With a proven ability to align with research objectives and navigate ethical decision-making, I am well-suited for leadership roles. Moreover, my strong organizational expertise and exceptional time management skills ensure successful project execution. My unwavering thirst for knowledge propels me toward ongoing excellence in my work.

I am thrilled at the prospect of contributing my comprehensive skill set and unwavering passion for data analysis, cartography, and collaborative teamwork to your esteemed organization. If you seek a motivated and versatile professional, I invite you to connect with me to explore how I can make a positive impact. I possess a solid educational foundation that complements my practical skills and supports my continuous professional growth.
